US special diplomat meets Pakistan Army chief to discuss Afghanistan situation

RAWALPINDI – Thomas West, United States (US) Special Representative for Afghanistan, called on General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) at GHQ, on Friday.

During the meeting, matters of mutual interest, the current security situation in Afghanistan and bilateral cooperation in various fields were discussed, the Inter-Services Public Relation said in a statement.

West arrived in Pakistan to attend the Troika Plus meeting chaired by Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi to review the developing situation in Afghanistan.

COAS said that Pakistan desires to maintain the tradition of bilateral engagement and wish for long term multi-domain enduring relationship with United States.

Gen Bajwa reiterated the need for global convergence on Afghanistan for avoiding looming humanitarian crisis and coordinated efforts for economic uplift of the Afghan people.

The visiting dignitary appreciated Pakistan’s role in Afghan situation, special efforts for border management, role in regional stability and pledged to play his part for further improvement in diplomatic cooperation with Pakistan at all levels.

Earlier this week, Androulla Kaminara, Ambassador of European Union (EU) called on Gen Bajwa where matters of mutual interests, regional security situation including current situation of Afghanistan and bilateral cooperation with European Union (EU) were discussed.

COAS said that Pakistan values its relations with EU countries and we earnestly look forward to enhance mutually beneficial multi-domain relations based on common interests.

The visiting dignitary appreciated Pakistan’s role in Afghan situation, efforts for regional stability and pledged to play their role for further improvements in diplomatic cooperation with Pakistan at all levels.
