A legislative body of Upper House of Parliament on Wednesday was informed that the government was making utmost efforts to ensure food security and also took appropriate measures to safeguard interest of farmers.
These views were discussed in Standing Committee on National Food Security and Research, which was held on Wednesday at Parliament House while Senator Syed Muzaffar Hussain Shah was on chair.
Senator Seemee Ezdi, Senator Sania Nishtar, Senator Kesho Bai, Senator Saifullah Abro, Senator Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar, Senator Kamran Murtaza, Senator Muhammad Akram and senior officers from the Ministry of National Food Security and Research along with all concerned officials attend the meeting.
Minister for National Food Security and Research Syed Fakhar Imam told the committee that th government has decided to develop and enhance the strategic reserves of wheat and also to ensure food security at all cost. Such type of food availability would ensure stability in food prices, the ministry maintained.
He also ensured that the ministry would ensure implementation of the committee recommendations.
Regarding increase in fertilizer prices, particularly DAP, the minister said that these rates were totally dependent on international prices that have soared to 70 percent.
