ISLAMABAD – Shaukat Tarin has been appointed as Prime Minister Imran Khan’s adviser on finance and revenue as his tenure as an unelected finance minister ended Saturday.

A notification issued by Joint Secretary to the Cabinet states, “In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of Article 93 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the President, on the advice of the Prime Minister, has been pleased to appoint, with immediate effect, Mr. Shaukat Ahmed Tarim as Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance and Revenue, with the status of Federal Minister”.

Tarin, who is currently leading loan talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, could not be elected as senator by the ruling government within the stipulated time frame of six months.

It was requisite for Tarin to get a Senate seat to continue as finance minister, as an unelected individual could not head the ministry, the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) and other cabinet committees beyond six months.

The prime minister had appointed Tarin as his finance minister in April this year.
