As the intermittent rain followed by flash floods hit parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Saturday and Sunday, at least twelve people of a family were killed and many other injured after the roof of their house caved in during monsoon rains in KP’s Torghar district early Sunday wee hours.
The tragic incident, as the reports reaching here said took place in the Jhatka village of the Torghar district of Kohistan division as the rains and flash floods inundated the area where number of houses were collapsed.
The Rescue workers and the locals rushed to the affected areas and started the rescue operation digging out the victims from the debris of the damaged houses and rushing them to various medical facilities though with great difficulties owing to area being in the harsh terrains.
“The floods damaged four houses killing and injuring several people”. Officials said adding so far, 12 bodies have been recovered and moved to the hospital.
They said the operation to rescue people stuck under the debris is underway. The rescue teams are facing difficulties reaching the area because of its harsh terrain.
The ill-fated people killed in the incident, reportedly belonged to the same family and that also include women and children
A flood in the rivers was reported after heavy rain, along with lightning and thunder that lashed number of cities in the parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said Monsoon rains have lashed multiple parts of the country since September 9. The National Disaster Management Authority has issued a rain alert across Pakistan and has instructed authorities to take all precautionary measures in case of an emergency.
The Met Office has predicted more isolated heavy showers in Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Islamabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and eastern Balochistan.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has directed the respective district administration to ensure effective rescue and relief activities in the affected areas.
