The University of Management and Technology (UMT) TV organised a seminar titled: “Freedom of Expression: Laws & Limitations.” Punjab Advocate General (AGP) Ahmad Awais participated was the guest speaker at the seminar.

UMT Rector Dr Muhammad Aslam warmly welcomed the guest speaker along with Dean School of Law Dr Usman Hameed and Head OCM Saqib Akhtar on arrival at the university.

In his speech, Ahmad Awais said that institutions like UMT are real asset to the country, adding that it is heartening that today the educational institutions are moving in right direction.

“Freedom of expression is essential to our ability to interpret and express our ideas.”
He said that the most significant attribute of a judge is to be 99% honest and 1% expert in his legal domains.

“This is how he can deliver judgments on merit. Freedom of expression is the essence of democracy and makes significant contributions to democratic society and also has been recognized as fundamental human rights.”

Mr. Awais expressed that it is, however, permissible for the state to limit freedom of expression and individual liberty under certain circumstances such as national security, public order, territorial integrity and maintain the authority and impartiality of the judiciary. Law students, faculty and staff participated in the seminar.
