A hand grenade explosion targeting a police van in Peshawar Friday left a policeman martyred and a passerby seriously wounded.

Officials say the police van was stationed at the Karkhano Market in the jurisdiction of Hayatabad police station when unidentified miscreants hurled a hand grenade on it that badly damaged the police vehicle.

A policeman named Amin embraced martyrdom, while a passerby sustained serious wounds.

The victims were rushed to the Hayatabad Medical Complex where the medics pronounced the cop dead.

The spokesperson of the hospital said that the injured has been given first aid and his condition is said to be stable.

The CCPO, Peshawar, Abbas Ahsan, speaking to the media, on the site of the blast said that the police are examining the incident from all angles.

However, he was still not sure if it was a terrorist attack or an accident. Suspects fled the scene after committing the crime, another official said.

The Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Shah Farman, has condemned the attack on police van in strong words and sympathized with family of slain cop saying the sacrifices of the security personnel in fight against the terrorism were matchless.
