ISLAMABAD – National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) on Monday rejected reports claiming that the Taliban had recovered Pakistan’s national identity cards (NICs) from the possession of Afghan nationals on the Afghanistan side.

Last week, it had emerged that a NIC had been recovered from the residence of an Afghan Army’s colonel during a Taliban raid at his home in Spin Boldak, a border town of Afghanistan.

NADRA in its statement said that the photos of ID cards circulating on social media were uploaded by an official of Landi Kotal Police Station on his Facebook account for identification of these persons.

It said that the ID cards are still part of the police station’s record, adding that the reports circulating on media are baseless and fake.

It has asked the public to not share the unverified information as such moves caused damage to the reputation of national institutions.

Earlier in the day, Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said that a new policy of verification, renewal and correction for the CNICs is being introduced in NADRA.

Addressing a news conference, he said that action has been taken against 39 NADRA officials in Karachi for their involvement in issuance of fake identity cards.

The Interior Minister said India and Israel have launched a hybrid war against Pakistan, and they want to put a question mark on the data of NADRA.

On July 8, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has revealed that Afghan agency National Directorate of Security (NDS) had issued Pakistani national identity cards to the terrorists associated with outlawed Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) from the database of National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).

The revelation was made in a press conference conducted by the director FIA Sindh Zone I, Amir Farooqui, saying that computerised national identity cards (CNICs) for TTP terrorists had been made by using the  National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) database.

Amir Farooqui added that the national identity cards were also issued to Al-Qaeda terrorists from NADRA, whereas, a suspect involved in Safoora carnage, Imran Ali, who was an Indian citizen, had also gotten a CNIC from the authority.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) director said that the investigation exposed the manipulation of suspects’ identifications who were involved in the armed attack on the Chinese consulate in Karachi as Allah Nazar and other terrorists managed to get CNICs from Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

Amir Farooqui said that several National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) Sindh employees were involved in the crime to issue national identity cards to the terrorists of outlawed outfits.

In May, Federal Minister for Interior Sheikh Rasheed had taken notice of the issuance of National Computerized Identity Cards (CNICs) to foreigners and removed DG RHO Karachi Mir Ajam Khan Durrani from the post.
