Administrator reviews arrangement to tackle imminent rains

Administrator Karachi Laiq Ahmed has said that all arrangements for monsoon season should be completed, pumps should be kept ready for drainage management in underpasses, 15 more pumps should be procured and delivered to places where rain water is abundant.

“The monsoon season will be relatively long this year and the rains are also likely to be higher than normal,” he said, adding that a comprehensive survey of the relevant engineers, underpasses and low-lying areas should be carried out.

Addressing a meeting on Rain Emergency, Metropolitan Commissioner Danish Saeed, Finance Advisor Ghulam Murtaza Bhutto, Senior Director Coordination Khalid Khan, Director General Technical Services Shabiha Al Hasnain Zaidi, Director General Parks Taha Saleem, Senior Director Municipal Services SM Taha, Chief Engineer Electrical and Mechanical Abbas Shah, Director Municipal Services Noman Arshad, Director City Warden Raja Rustam, DawaatIslamic Disaster Management InchargeShafaat Ali Attari and Yahya Attari were present in the meeting.

The Administrator said it has been raining in the suburbs of Karachi including Super Highway and Gadap Town on Friday so it can be said that the rains have started in Karachi and all the concerned departments should be functional as per the given plan.

Regarding this, he said, all the concerned departments of KMC, DMCs, Cantonment Boards, Water Boards and Solid Waste Management Boards should be connected with each other so that a joint strategy could be adopted in rainy days, he said.

“Ensure and provide complete lists of officers and staff deployed in this regard to facilitate communication with each other,” he said, adding that in view of past experience, the drainage system in underpasses should be improved.

“We have to keep as many manpower and mechanical resources as possible in active condition,” he said, adding that in order to keep the condition in good condition and to draw water from the underpasses as soon as possible. An emergency cell will also be available 24 hours a day.
