The decision to finalize the policy for setting up of power plants at landfill sites from waste collected on a daily basis in Karachi has been finalized and it will be sent to the Sindh Cabinet for approval on Wednesday.

The meeting was chaired by Nasir Hussain Shah and Sindh Energy Minister Imtiaz Ahmed Sheikh at the Energy Department office.

It was decided in the meeting that land would be provided free of cost to the companies setting up waste power plants at landfill sites and the Sindh government would not charge any tax.

Garbage power generating companies will be able to set up power plants up to 35 MW at the landfill site.  And NEPRA will be approached for tariff on electricity generated from waste at this landfill site.

It was decided in the meeting that the waste power project in Karachi would soon be extended to other cities in Sindh.

According to the plan so far in the consideration, the provincial government will provide land to power generation companies on the landfill sites without charging them anything against it. Moreover, the same companies will be exempt from any taxes levied on the corporate sector to allow them an impetus in power generation, said Shaikh.

The session said the companies to generate energy from waste material can instal capacity for up to 35 megawatts and noted that soon the plan will be extended to city sites as well.

The meeting was attended by Sindh Local Government Secretary Najam Shah, Sindh Energy Secretary Tariq Ali Shah, Sindh Solid Waste Management Board Chairman Zubair Ahmed Channa and other concerned officers.
