In an effort to enhance agricultural production, farmers of Gomal Zam Dam Command Area (GZD CA) were provided with modern agricultural machinery and equipment with the financial assistance of US-AID here on Saturday.
In this connection, a ceremony was arranged at the Agriculture office that was largely attended by farmers. The deputy commissioner Kabir Khan Afridi distributed Brush cutter machines, Spray pumps, Grain Storage Drums and Maiz planters among the growers of GZD CA.
Project Director GZDA CA engineer Zubair Khan, Director Agriculture Amanullah Khan, Agriculture Officer Ahtisham and other officials of Agriculture department were also present.
Orienting the farmers about the awarded machinery, Project Director GZD CA Zubair Khan said that under Gomal Zam Dam approximately 2,00000 acres of barren land was made cultivable by 429 kilometers long canal system of the Dam that was no way less than a blessing for the poor farmers of a least developed area.
He noted that with the collaboration of US-AID and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, soon the farmers would also be provided with heavy agricultural machinery through locally formed “Water Users Association Committees”.
Deputy Commissioner Kabir Khan Afridi also spoke on the occasion and termed the initiative quite helpful to boost local agriculture production. He mentioned that due to persistent follow up of the district government, the Waran Canal was formally handed over to the Irrigation Department for proper maintenance of the canal, adding, plantation on 36 kilometers alongside the Waran Canal was also on cards to make the canal more sustainable, he maintained.
