ISLAMABAD – The federal government on Tuesday appointed Muhammad Tahir Rai as new Inspector General of Police (IGP) Balochistan, replacing Mohsin Hassan Butt.
A notification said that Rai has been transferred and posted as the Provincial Police Officer (PPO) Balochistan, in his own pay and scale, with immediate effect and until further orders.
The new IGP, who is a BS-21 officer of the Police Service of Pakistan, was previously serving as the additional IG of the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) in Punjab.
During his tenure as CTD AIG, Rai was also removed from his post by Lahore High Court (LHC) over the Sahiwal incident in which four people, including a couple and their teenage daughter, were killed in an alleged encounter in January 2019.
However, the Punjab government re-appointed him as AIG in March.
