The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Pir Adil Shah has been elected Mayor of the Metropolitan Corporation of Islamabad (MCI) by securing 43 votes, according to unofficial results.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) conducted the elections for the vacant seat of Islamabad’s mayor on Monday.
Against Pir Adil Shah’s 43 votes, PTI’s Sajid Mahmood was able to secure 26 votes. Out of a total of 73 votes, 69 were cast.
Pir Adil Gillani, 33, is also custodian of the shrine of Pir Imam Ali Gillani at Ratta Hotar near Bari Imam.
After his predecessor Sheikh Ansar Aziz’ resignation , the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had decided to hold elections to fill the vacancy, even if for a few weeks.
Ansar Aziz was elected on February 15, 2016 for a five-year tenure, which expires on the same day next year.
He had taken oath on March 4. The person elected in his place will hold the position for the remaining period only.
In yesterday’s polls, the PML-N candidate enjoyed a clear majority over his two rivals.
The polling process started at 9:00am and ended at 5:00pm. There was no break in the polling process.
The offices located in the building, which were declared as polling stations.
All all arrangements were completed for the election of Mayor of Islamabad who will remain Mayor for only six weeks.
However, sources in the PML-N said the victory of their candidate would be helpful to mobilise the public for the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM)’s anti-government rally to the capital city in February.
“The timing of the mayor’s election is very important. If our candidate is elected mayor, it will be helpful for our party workers to host PDM,” Deputy Mayor Syed Zeeshan Naqvi told Pakistan Observer.
While talking to Pakistan Observer Pir Adil said that he was confident that he would comfortably win the election.
