Shallwani chairs meeting on modernisation of bridges

Administrator and Commissioner Iftikhar Shallwani has said that the renovation work of the three-lane bridge is in the final stages and in view of its importance. He was addressing a meeting of the Works Department on modernization and construction of bridges. Victorian style street lights are being installed on the bridge while on the sidewalks. New tiles have been laid and green belts will be beautified by planting trees. The work of protective grill of the bridge has been completed. Commissioner Karachi Iftikhar Shallwani said that the Karachi Metropolitan Municipality has been using its resources to build bridges in the city. Repairs are underway and roads are being paved on a priority basis where there is severe traffic congestion or the flow of traffic is being affected due to the section on which potholes have formed, he said. The replacement of the expansion joints is also aimed at keeping traffic flowing, he said, adding that the three-lane bridge will be renovated. Later, a model bridge will take shape and if the citizens like it, other bridges in the city will be renovated in the same style, he directed the Works Department to take special care of quality in all works. And use standard materials and equipment, Shallwani said, adding that projects under the annual development program would be launched soon and priority would be given to projects that have been under construction for years.
