Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar on Thursday inaugurated Firdous Market underpass named after Lal Shahbaz Qalandar.
The 540-metre-long two-lane dual carriageway underpass will facilitate traffic from the adjoining areas with special arrangements for water disposal. The underpass will help resolve traffic jam issue in Gulberg and Cantt areas.
The project would also benefit more than 91,000 vehicles on daily basis and save fuel worth millions of rupees annually. The project has been completed in 18 months with a cost of Rs1.18 billion.
Talking on the occasion, the CM said this underpass will ensure smooth flow of traffic between Centrepoint, MM Alam Road and Cavalry Ground. He said special arrangements have been made for the quick disposal of rainwater. The government has given special attention to the development of the provincial metropolis and new projects would also be started to provide more facilities to the citizens, he said.
Provincial ministers Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed, Murad Raas, president PTI (central Punjab) Ejaz Ch, SACM Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan, Chief Secretary, Vice Chairman LDA Sheikh Muhammad Imran, parliamentarians including Saadia Sohail and Sumaira Ahmed, Commissioner Lahore and Secretary Information were also present.
On the other hand, CM Advisor on Information Firdous Ashiq Awan said the Buzdar government does not merely talk but also fulfills its promises and the underpass will pave the way for other projects as well.
On the occasion, Education Minister Dr Murad Raas thanked Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar for launching Lahore’s first development project in his constituency PP-159.
In a tweet, he said, “Today at the opening of Firdous Market Underpass in our Constituency PP159. I thank CM Usman Buzdar for inaugurating it and making life easier for residents in the area.” Earlier, Prime Minister Imran Khan did not inaugurate the project as per plan on Wednesday.
Deadlines were revised several times for the first mega project launched by the PTI government in the city, which was initially supposed to be completed in three months’ time well before August-end. The government said no residential or commercial building was damaged to build the underpass. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar has sought a report from DPO Sheikhupura about molestation of a girl student after kidnapping and directed to arrest the criminals at the earliest.
