Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman has sent a public statement to NEPRA containing various recommendations regarding proposed amendment of NEPRA in the distribution license of K-Electric Limited. Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman has demanded that a forensic audit of K Electric for the last 15 years be carried out and its report be made public. The letter states, “To end K Electric’s monopoly, separate the transmission, production and distribution sectors and allow other companies to operate. Consumers have the right to buy electricity from whichever company they want and in case of competition between the companies not only the power system will be innovated and improved but also cheap and uninterrupted electricity will be available to the consumers.” The recommendations sent by K Electric further said that while K Electric owes crores of rupees to national institutions, Sui Southern Gas and NTDC, it owes more than Rs 42 billion to K Electric in terms of callback of the citizens of Karachi. Fifteen years have passed since the privatization of KE, but load shedding from Karachi could not end. When selling assets of national importance to an offshore company, it was stated that KESC receives a large amount of subsidy every year, which is a huge burden on the public exchequer.
