The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) confirmed on Sunday another 14 deaths caused by rain-related incidents, taking the country’s death toll for heavy monsoon rains to 233.
At least eight people were said to have sustained injuries. According to the NDMA’s report, the victims include105 men, 39 women and 89 children.
The report adds that Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa saw the highest number of casualties as 195 people were killed in the province, followed by 84 in Sindh, 19 in Balochistan, 16 in Punjab, 11 in Gilgit-Baltistan and 10 in Kashmir.
The monsoon rains and urban flooding damaged 10 access roads, 10 bridges,
two hotels, three shops, five mosques and six powerhouses. Moreover, 1,249 houses were partially damaged and 1,359 houses were completely destroyed.
The recent spells of monsoon rains also caused death and destruction in many areas of Sindh, including Karachi. Hundreds of villages in Sindh and Punjab on Sunday were inundated with stormwater after heavy thundershowers lashed parts of Sindh and Punjab.
Due to heavy rains in Sindh, the rise of the water level in the embankments of canals passing through Golarchi Tehsil of Badin district wreaked havoc.
In several villages of Sanghar’s Sindhri Tehsil, the walls of mud houses collapsed while in Tando Muhammad Khan, victims of the floods were forced to abandon their homes after heavy downpours damaged their houses and flooded their area.
More than 200 villages have been submerged in rainwater in Mirpur Khas District’s Digri.
In Punjab’s Layyah district, 40 settlements have been flooded while rice, sugarcane, and cotton crops have been severely affected in the Khushab and Rajanpur districts.
