We have installed 60 to 70 walk-through disinfectant tunnels and are sanitising every animal that will be up for sale this year in the cattle market that is set up along the Superhighway here, claimed market spokesperson YawarRaza. Raza was speaking on TV channel on Wednesday. He said families, people over 50 years won’t be allowed to visit the market this year. This is one of the precautionary measures that the market organisers are taking on the government’s recommendation to avoid a massive outbreak of the novel coronavirus. The spokesperson said an additional 200 acres will be used so that sellers and buyers can practice “auto social distancing”. Every year, the market is set up on 800 acres, but this time it’ll be set up on 1,000 acres of land. Raza said the ground has the capacity to keep 600,000 animals while 6,000 have already been unloaded so far. “Currently, sellers are booking their stalls. We’ll seal the gates by July 1. The public hasn’t really started coming in. We want people to know that this year things will be little different and you can’t treat it like a festival,” he said. He explained that organisers will make sure that those who don’t follow the SOPs are removed from the market. Only packed food items will be sold to cut any festive-like atmosphere, he explained. Federal Science Minister FawadChaudhry says Pakistan will celebrate EidulAzha on July 31 and the Met Office has forecast rain for at least three days in Karachi till Eid. When asked about precautionary measures in case rain lashes the city like last year, Raza responded that drainage channels were recently built to avoid accumulation of rainwater in ground. He also requested people to avoid coming to the cattle market on the days on which rain is predicted.
