LAHORE – Punjab government has launched an extensive campaign against the smuggling of endangered species at the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
Wildlife officials in Kasur district successfully recovered a 7-foot-long marsh crocodile, estimated to be worth crores in the global market.
The wildlife department executed the operation with care, skillfully luring the large reptile into a net before transferring it to the Gutwala Wildlife Breeding Centre nearby. The giant reptile was rescued from illegal captivity, and authorities have initiated legal action against those responsible. The incident was also captured in a video that went viral on social media.
Maryam Aurangzeb, senior minister in Punjab, praised the efforts of the wildlife officers, noting that this is the first time such extensive measures have been implemented to protect wildlife in the province. She emphasized the importance of animal rights for maintaining ecological balance.
This crackdown is part of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s broader vision for a safer and more sustainable Punjab, which also includes initiatives aimed at reducing illegal weapons and drug activities. Punjab Police conducted multiple raids, resulting in significant drug seizures and the confiscation of numerous illegal firearms.
The increased focus on wildlife protection and law enforcement underscores the Punjab government’s commitment to creating a safer environment for both its residents and wildlife.
