THE 60th anniversary of Sino-French diplomatic ties is a significant milestone. In 1964, France and the People’s Republic of China established diplomatic relations. This relationship has evolved over the years and continues to be important for both nations. To celebrate this historic occasion, the Diamond Jubilee celebrations kicked off with a grand reception on January 25, 2024 marking the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France. The event took place at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing. During this significant event, President Xi Jinping delivered a video speech, emphasizing the profound importance of this relationship. The Chinese President dwelled upon the Historical Significance, China-France Spirit, Future Prospects, People to People Bonds and Global Cooperation.

The key points from his speech highlighted the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France 60 years ago, which was a major event in international relations. He recalled that Chairman Mao Zedong and General Charles de Gaulle demonstrated extraordinary wisdom and courage by opening the door for exchanges and cooperation between China and the West during the Cold War. President Xi Jinping mentioned the unique history of China-France relations, which has given rise to what is now known as the “China-France spirit.” He stressed that this spirit embodies values such as independence, mutual understanding, foresight, mutual benefit and win-win cooperation.

It was reiterated that looking ahead, both countries need to uphold the original aspiration of their diplomatic relations. They should actively anticipate the future and dare to make greater progress. By deepening bilateral relations and responding to global uncertainties with stability, China and France can continue to contribute to world peace, stability and development. In the realm of people-to-people bonds, it was stressed that the China-France Year of Culture and Tourism, along with the Paris Olympic Games, provide opportunities to expand people-to-people and cultural exchanges. Closer bonds between citizens of both nations will strengthen the relationship even further.

Regarding global cooperation, it was reminded that China and France should jointly advocate for an equal and orderly multi-polar world and promote universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization. Their collaboration can address global challenges and maintain world peace and stability. French President Emmanuel Macron had also delivered a video speech during the same event, emphasizing the responsibility to build on the ambitious goals set in 1964 and continue working together for the benefit of both peoples and global peace and stability.

Additionally, on January 31, 2024, an event was held at the Palace of Versailles in Paris to celebrate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries and the opening of the Culture and Tourism Year. The high point of the celebrations was Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to France in early May 2024, marking his first trip to Europe since the pandemic. His visit included discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron and other engagements aimed at strengthening bilateral ties. Upon his arrival in Paris, Xi Jinping published a signed article titled “Carrying Forward the Spirit that Guided the Establishment of China-France Diplomatic Relations, Working Together for Global Peace and Development” in the French newspaper “Le Figaro”. In the article, he emphasized cooperation and global peace.

Despite trade tensions and investigations into various sectors, the longstanding relationship between China and France remains vital and continues to evolve. Over the past six decades, China and France have maintained a strong and multifaceted relationship. Their diplomatic ties have consistently been at the forefront of China’s engagement with Western countries. These relations have benefited both peoples and contributed to better understanding. In the year leading up to this anniversary, China and France have engaged in a series of high-level exchanges. These interactions demonstrate the vitality and vigour of their bilateral relations.

The China-France Year of Culture and Tourism provided an opportunity for cultural exchanges, including exhibitions, artistic collaborations and intellectual dialogues. French photographer Grégoire de Gaulle made a significant donation to China Media Group’s Foreign Expert’s Book House, further enhancing cultural ties. Airbus also invested in elevating aircraft services in China, strengthening economic cooperation. As part of the anniversary celebrations, the ‘Meet Napoleon’ exhibition in Beijing ignited a frenzy of interest in French culture. This event deepened cultural ties between the two nations.

China’s top diplomat Wang Yi, while speaking via telephone to Emmanuel Bonne, the French President’s Diplomatic Counsellor stressed that China is prepared to enhance high-level exchanges with France, emphasizing the pivotal role of head-of-state diplomacy. Wang reiterated China’s commitment to elevating bilateral cooperation across various domains, aiming to contribute significantly to global challenges. Amidst a complex and volatile international landscape, both countries are expected to align their positions on critical issues related to world peace, stability and humanity’s future. Wang expressed hope that France would continue pursuing a positive and pragmatic policy toward China within the European Union. Despite misguided calls for “decoupling” from China by some European politicians, the frequent interactions between China and France serve as a stabilizing force. These interactions are crucial for addressing pressing international matters.

Beyond official exchanges, China-France relations have also flourished in military and commercial cooperation. Recently, the Chinese and French militaries signed a framework document to establish maritime and aerial cooperation and dialogue mechanism between their respective theatres. This cooperative effort aims to deepen mutual trust and enhance collaboration, with the shared goal of safeguarding regional security and stability. Simultaneously, France’s Airbus is engaged in discussions with China regarding a potentially significant aircraft order, which could involve hundreds of jets, as reported by Reuters. Following Brexit, the UK’s influence in Europe has visibly declined, while Russia faces pressure from Western nations. Against this backdrop, communication between China and France assumes greater significance on the international stage. In summary, the 60-year milestone of China-France diplomatic relations represents a shared commitment to cooperation, cultural exchange and global well-being. It reflects the enduring friendship between these two nations and their joint efforts to build a more stable and prosperous world. Let us hope that the next 60 years bring even greater glories for both nations!
