27th Amendment Gives Legal Shield To Field Marshal Post

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari claimed a “crushing defeat” for India, praising the global recognition of the Field Marshal’s performance. He announced a bold move: the position of Field Marshal will now receive constitutional protection, marking a historic moment in Pakistan’s political landscape.

Bilawal said his party is fulfilling promises of the Charter of Democracy, correcting past mistakes, and putting an end to controversial suo motu notices following the 27th Constitutional Amendment. “After this amendment, no more suo motu notices will be issued,” he declared.

He highlighted his party’s growing influence, Bilawal said, “We have the majority to bring this amendment, and no one, even the fiercest opponents can undo the 18th Amendment.” He stressed that constitutional amendments require consensus, not just majority votes, recalling that both the 26th and 18th Amendments were passed with broad agreement.

In strong message to critics, Bilawal promised equal representation for all provinces in Constitutional Court and underscored that the 18th Amendment had secured provincial rights.

Pakistan’s parliament approved constitutional amendments that would give Army Chief Asim Munir greater position.  The changes would create a new position, Chief of Defence Forces, consolidating command over all armed forces under COAS, who would retain his rank of Field Marshal and receive lifelong immunity after his term.

Under new changes, a new Federal Constitutional Court would handle constitutional cases, limiting the Supreme Court to civil and criminal matters. Critics say this undermines judicial independence and democracy, while the government argues the reforms improve governance, military coordination, and efficiency.

Opposition parties boycotted parliament vote, calling the amendments a power grab.
