27th Constitutional Amendment sails through NA with Two-Thirds Majority

27th Constitutional Amendment Sails Through Na Two Thirds Majority

ISLAMABAD – National Assembly approved 27th Constitutional Amendment with a dramatic two-thirds majority. Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar introduced six last-minute amendments, bringing the total changes to 59, sparking debates over the scope and implications of the bill.

The amendment could reshape Article 6, which deals with treason, and introduces the Federal Constitutional Court alongside the Supreme Court, raising questions about judicial oversight and accountability. Any acts of treason mentioned in the Constitution would now be immune from validation by any court, including the Supreme Court and High Courts.

Adding to the drama, PTI dissident Senator Saifullah Abro’s resignation remains unprocessed, halting parliamentary action against him. Meanwhile, government sources confirmed that the opposition’s 11 proposed amendments have also been included, intensifying political negotiations.

The amendment sparked high-profile meetings, with Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar sitting down with PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Sherry Rehman, Naveed Qamar, and Murtaza Wahab. When pressed by reporters about allegations that the amendment favors an individual, Bilawal replied that he would address the matter in a public speech.

Azam Nazir Tarar warned that any ambiguity in the amendment would be discussed in Parliament, stressing that under Article 239, only Parliament has the power to make or amend the Constitution—not the courts.

As the National Assembly session continues under Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, political observers are closely watching, with the approval of the 27th Amendment seen as a decisive moment in Pakistan’s political and legal history. Sources also reveal that the government is pushing hard for the early establishment of the Federal Constitutional Court, which could redefine the balance of power in the country.
