LAHORE – Sri Lanka produced commanding batting display in Tri-Nation Series final at Gaddafi Stadium, posting a daunting 325 for 8 against Pakistan and putting themselves within touching distance of the trophy.
The star of the first innings was Kamindu Mendis, who smashed superb 131 off 128 balls to register his maiden ODI century in a high-pressure final. His brilliant knock, decorated with 12 fours and two sixes, gave Sri Lanka the solid foundation they needed and kept Pakistan’s bowlers under pressure for most of the innings.
Sri Lanka also got valuable support from Pavan Rathnayake, who played an impressive hand of 77 off 65 balls, striking eight fours to maintain the momentum in the middle overs. Earlier, Avishka Fernando chipped in with 38, while Dasun Shanaka added a quick 17. Maheesh Theekshana remained unbeaten on 9 and Asitha Fernando stayed not out on 6 as Sri Lanka finished strongly.
Pakistan’s bowlers had their moments but could not fully contain Sri Lanka’s batting charge. Salman Ali Agha picked up two wickets, dismissing Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis, while Shaheen Afridi also struck twice, including the crucial wicket of centurion Kamindu Mendis. Naseem Shah claimed two scalps as well, and Haris Rauf and Faheem Ashraf took one wicket each.
With Sri Lanka ending on 325 for 8, Pakistan now need 326 runs to win the Tri-Series title. The chase promises a thrilling second half, especially under the lights at Gaddafi Stadium where the new ball can be a major factor early on. However, if Pakistan’s batters survive the initial swing and dew comes into play later in the evening, the contest could swing back in their favour.
Sri Lanka’s total has set up a blockbuster finish, and with the trophy on the line, a cracking run chase awaits in Lahore.
