NEW YORK – New York’s mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has said he stands firmly by all his previous statements about US President Donald Trump, asserting that his position remains unchanged even after meeting the president.
In an interview, Mamdani was asked whether he still considers President Trump a “fascist” and an “enemy of democracy,” terms he had used in the past.
The mayor-elect responded unequivocally, saying he stands by everything he has said before.
Mamdani said that during his recent meeting with President Trump, they held an open discussion on key issues facing New York City, including immigration, housing, the economy and public safety.
He added that he remains committed to continuing the city’s longstanding policies aimed at maintaining public safety.
However, Mamdani noted that residents from different neighbourhoods have reported increased immigration enforcement raids and arrests, which he said is a matter of concern.
Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor after defeating a Republican and a Trump-backed independent candidate.
He is set to assume office on January 1.
