ISLAMABAD – A candlelight vigil will be held in capital city today on August 27 to remember the 14 newborn babies who lost their lives in a tragic fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).
The ceremony is scheduled for 6 pm at the main entrance of PIMS. The event aims to pay tribute to the newborn victims and express solidarity with their grieving families.
Organizers have urged citizens to attend the peaceful gathering and bring candles. Participants will light a candle in memory of each child who died in the tragedy.
The organizers have also appealed to attendees to maintain peace, dignity and discipline throughout the ceremony.
The fire occurred on August 26 in the intensive care unit of the Children/Mother and Child Health Ward at PIMS, resulting in the deaths of 14 newborn babies.
According to authorities, an investigation into the incident is currently underway.
A fire broke out on the third floor of the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Ward at PIMS Hospital in the early hours, according to the district administration.
Rescue teams immediately reached the hospital after receiving information about the fire. Six fire brigade vehicles and four ambulances took part in the emergency response.
The fire was brought under control, while children were evacuated and shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The federal government on Wednesday gave the additional charge of federal health secretary to Capt. (Retd.) Muhammad Mahmood, a BS-21 officer of Pakistan Administrative Service.
He has replaced Aslam Ghauri, who was suspended for 120 days earlier in the day following tragic fire incident at PIMS hospital that claimed lives of 14 infants.
