We Batted Long To Tire Indian Bowlers Says South African Coach

GUWAHATI – South Africa deliberately extended their innings in the Guwahati Test against India to exhaust the opposition’s bowlers, their coach revealed, as the visitors declared at 548 for 5 on the fourth day.

During a post-match interaction, South Africa coach Shukri Konard explained the strategy, saying the team intentionally batted longer to tire out the Indian bowlers.

“We deliberately extended our innings to exhaust the Indian bowlers and make them struggle on the field,” he said, adding that the approach was also meant to put pressure on India and reduce their chances of mounting a comeback.

Konard further noted that the declaration was delayed to frustrate the Indian team into asking for it themselves. “We wanted India to feel desperate for the declaration so that their chances of winning the match would be minimized,” he said.

South Africa’s tactical approach paid off as they secured a dominant position in the match. This victory follows consecutive wins against India, including a 30-run triumph at Eden Gardens and a 408-run win in another Test.

The series win marks a historic achievement for South Africa, as it is their first Test series victory on Indian soil in 25 years. The last time South Africa defeated India in a home series was in 2000, highlighting the significance of this performance.

Konard’s statement underscores South Africa’s deliberate strategy of combining batting dominance with psychological pressure, demonstrating the team’s tactical maturity and focus on exploiting every advantage against a strong Indian side.

This approach has drawn attention not only for the results but also for the insight it provides into modern Test match strategies, where managing opposition fatigue can be as crucial as scoring runs.
