SYDNEY – Australian batter Usman Khawaja has found himself facing a fresh controversy after making an inappropriate comment about the Perth Test pitch, adding to the criticism he recently endured for injuring his back while playing golf ahead of the match.
The Australian media reported that Khawaja made the remark during a luncheon hosted by his charitable foundation. The Perth pitch, rated “very good” by the ICC, was reportedly described by Khawaja in disparaging terms, prompting concern within Cricket Australia.
Cricket Australia noted the comment and stated that Khawaja is not authorised to publicly criticise pitches. The board is expected to seek a formal explanation from him before the day-night Brisbane Test of the Ashes series, scheduled to begin on December 4. Officials have indicated that if the explanation is unsatisfactory, action may be taken under the Code of Conduct.
The opener is already under pressure to clear a fitness test ahead of the Brisbane match. Khawaja faced widespread criticism after injuring his back during a golf session prior to the Perth Test, which prevented him from opening the innings.
The incident led several former cricketers and experts to demand his removal from the squad.
Despite the repeated controversies, Khawaja has been retained in Australia’s squad for the upcoming Ashes Test in Brisbane.
