WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump has stated that the violence in Iran’s crackdown on protesters was decreasing, and he did not believe there were plans for widespread executions of protesters.
His remarks came amid growing concerns from analysts and diplomats about the potential dangers of a US military intervention in Iran.
Trump made the comments during an Oval Office event, as tensions heightened in the Middle East over the possibility of the United States launching military strikes against Iran.
Despite his optimistic view on the situation, Trump did not dismiss the possibility of US military action entirely, following his previous threats to intervene in support of the protesters.
The United States may launch a military intervention in Iran within the next 24 hours, international media reported citing European officials.
The officials stated the situation is rapidly approaching a point of military engagement.
In response to the growing threat, the UK has reportedly recalled personnel from its military base in Qatar as a precautionary measure.
This follows comments from US President Donald Trump, who had previously threatened military action against Iran in the wake of protests within the country.
Iran Issues Warning
Meanwhile, Iran, in turn, has expressed its willingness to engage in both diplomatic talks and military conflict, should the situation escalate.
The Iranian government has also warned US allies in the Middle East of retaliation if an attack is carried out. Specifically, Iran has declared that American military bases in the region will be targeted.
In a related development, a senior Iranian official stated that Iran has officially notified its regional counterparts—including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Turkey—that any US military action against Iran will result in immediate retaliation against American interests in these countries.
Reports indicated that Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Oman have all strongly opposed a potential US attack on Iran.
These Gulf nations have warned of serious consequences for the global oil market, with a potential disruption in the supply chain that could have severe impacts on the global economy, including the US.
Moreover, Saudi authorities have assured Tehran that they will not participate in any military conflict involving Iran and will not allow the US to use their airspace for strikes against the Iranian nation.
