WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump on Friday warned Iran that the United States would act to protect peaceful protesters if they face violence or are killed.
In a statement posted on his Truth Social account, Trump said that America is fully prepared to intervene to safeguard demonstrators if necessary.
The remarks come amid ongoing protests in Iran against rising inflation and the falling value of the national currency. Recent clashes between protesters and security forces left six demonstrators dead and led to the arrest of 30 others.
Responding to the warning, Ali Larijani, advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, stated that U.S. interference in Iran’s internal protest matters would amount to spreading chaos in the region. Larijani emphasized that Trump should understand that any foreign intervention would destabilize the region.
Several people died and many others injured during protest against sky-rocketing inflation in Iran.
According to Iranian media, confrontations occurred between protesters and security forces in the cities of Lorestan, Fasa, and Azna. In several areas, the protesters attacked government buildings and attempted to set fire to police stations.
The reports stated that police used live ammunition, rubber bullets, and tear gas to disperse the demonstrators. The clashes reportedly left six people dead, including one security personnel, and many others injured. Several protesters involved in the unrest have been arrested.
The protests, which began in the capital Tehran, are driven by public anger over soaring inflation and the falling value of the Iranian rial. The demonstrations have now spread to other parts of the country.
The Iranian currency has been under pressure due to Western sanctions, which has accelerated the rise in inflation and worsened the economic situation.
