THE growing importance both Pakistan and Central Asian countries are giving to one another to promote relations across diverse fields is becoming increasingly evident.
From energy and transport to agriculture and industry, the mutual recognition of potential synergies is paving the way for a new era of cooperation. In this context, Pakistan’s initiative to develop a Five-Year Roadmap (2026-2030) aimed at significantly increasing trade with Uzbekistan is indeed a crucial step toward transforming shared economic aspirations into concrete outcomes.
The announcement of this strategic roadmap came during the second session of Pakistan-Uzbekistan Joint Working Group on Trade in Islamabad. However it is important that roadmap, goes beyond being a routine policy document; rather it should serve as a binding framework with precise directions, sector-specific strategies and a shared commitment from both sides to achieve the goals outlined. Connectivity remains at the heart of any such trade initiative. Without efficient and reliable routes for the movement of goods and services, even the best-laid plans may fail to deliver. In this regard, it is particularly encouraging that an alternative trade route through China for Uzbekistan is being considered. This corridor, described as a shorter and more efficient option, could significantly enhance bilateral trade flows, reduce transit times and improve access to Central Asian markets, benefiting both nations. The roadmap’s emphasis on sector-specific strategies, facilitated through eight dedicated working groups, reflects a pragmatic approach. By focusing on key areas such as energy, transport, agriculture and industry, the two countries can ensure that economic engagement is comprehensive, mutually beneficial and sustainable. A committed, coordinated effort can transform potential into real trade volumes, investment and shared prosperity. There is indeed immense potential for cooperation between Pakistan and Uzbekistan, as well as with other Central Asian countries. The current momentum of engagement must continue, with both sides actively exploring opportunities to expand commercial ties, facilitate trade and strengthen regional connectivity. If executed thoughtfully, the roadmap can serve not only as a blueprint for bilateral economic partnership but also as a model for Pakistan’s engagement with the broader Central Asian region, unlocking new avenues of growth and mutual prosperity.
