Stop Israel undermining peace

Despite a ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah, the killing of twenty people by Israel in Lebanon is a deeply troubling development. According to Lebanon’s state media, Israeli warplanes and drones targeted multiple locations in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley.

This comes in the aftermath of a United States–Iran memorandum of understanding aimed at ending hostilities across multiple fronts. The framework explicitly envisages not only a cessation of direct U.S.–Iran confrontation but also an immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, alongside broader de-escalation measures and the reopening of key strategic routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.Yet despite this clearly defined diplomatic architecture, Israel carried out strikes in Lebanon with apparent disregard for the ceasefire environment that the agreement was intended to establish. This raises serious questions about its commitment to regional de-escalation and its willingness to respect internationally mediated frameworks. Israel has always and continues to act as a spoiler.

The whole world is watching the United States and Iran engaged in talks in Switzerland with great interest. These negotiations represent a critical opportunity to move beyond crisis management toward a more durable regional settlement. The US–Iran memorandum of understanding has already generated a degree of optimism across the international community, and it is imperative that this momentum is not allowed to collapse or be shattered by continued escalation on the ground.Nothing less than a permanent and enforceable agreement is required if stability is to be achieved. There is hope that both sides will demonstrate the seriousness and responsibility that the moment demands. However, such negotiations cannot succeed in isolation from developments on the ground. If agreed frameworks are not respected by all relevant actors, particularly Israel in the Lebanese theatre, then even the most carefully constructed diplomatic initiatives risk unraveling. This is where the responsibility of the United States becomes crucial. As the key strategic partner of Israel, Washington must use its leverage to ensure compliance with ceasefire understanding and to restrain further escalation in Lebanon. The economic consequences of any renewed conflict cannot be ignored either. The recent instability linked to regional warfare already disrupted energy markets, increased global oil volatility and contributed to broader economic uncertainty. Any further deterioration, especially involving strategic points such as the Strait of Hormuz, would have severe implications not just for the region but for the global economy.Israel’s military actions risk prolonging instability and deepening mistrust at a moment when the region desperately needs restraint and political maturity. Ceasefires cannot survive if they are selectively observed or unilaterally interpreted. Peace processes demand discipline, reciprocity, and above all, respect for agreed commitments. The Middle East stands at a decisive crossroads. It can either continue on a path of recurring escalation driven by mistrust and unilateral action, or it can finally transition toward a structured framework of peace. For that to happen, all parties must honour their commitments, and no actor should be allowed to undermine the possibility of peace.
