The decision by PPP and PML-N to form a coalition government in Gilgit-Baltistan is indeed a welcome development, reflecting political maturity, sagacity and a recognition that cooperation is the most effective way to address the challenges facing the country and its federating units. The power-sharing arrangement, under which the chief minister and the speaker will belong to the PPP while the governor, deputy speaker and leader of the opposition will come from the PML-N, demonstrates that both parties are willing to rise above narrow political considerations in favour of stability. Such an understanding is particularly significant because the PPP and PML-N are also allies at the federal level and appreciate the importance of consensus-building in navigating complex political and economic realities. At a time when Pakistan grapples with economic challenges, the ability of major political stakeholders to work together sends a reassuring message. It is encouraging that both parties have chosen accommodation and mutual trust as the basis of their partnership in Gilgit-Baltistan. The people of the region are likely to welcome this arrangement, hoping that it translates into continuity of policies, better governance and accelerated development. Gilgit-Baltistan possesses immense untapped potential. From its breathtaking natural beauty and world-class tourism opportunities to its strategic significance and rich natural resources, the region can become a major engine of economic growth. Realising this potential, however, requires political stability and coordinated policymaking. A coalition government backed by the two largest mainstream parties is better positioned to undertake long-term development initiatives, improve infrastructure, promote sustainable tourism, attract investment and create employment opportunities for local communities.
The spirit underlying the Gilgit-Baltistan agreement also resonates with recent calls for greater political dialogue at the national level. Speaking in the National Assembly the other, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari rightly underscored the importance of consensus in steering the country through its challenges. Similarly, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry’s remarks welcoming indications that opposition parties may be willing to engage in dialogue are encouraging. Political disputes are best resolved through engagement, parliamentary mechanisms and meaningful negotiations. Dialogue remains the most effective democratic instrument for building understanding, reducing tensions and finding workable solutions to complex problems. The reported willingness of both government and the opposition to explore negotiations should therefore be welcomed. If pursued with sincerity and seriousness, such engagement can help bridge political divides and foster an environment conducive to reform and national progress. While differences of opinion are natural in any democracy, there should be broad agreement on matters of national importance, particularly economic stability and development. In this context, renewed efforts towards a Charter of Economy deserve urgent attention. For years, political leaders, business groups and economists have advocated a national economic framework that transcends electoral cycles and partisan interests. Meaningful dialogue between the government and opposition could finally provide the opportunity to transform this long-standing aspiration into reality. Such a consensus would also send a powerful message to the international community that Pakistan’s political leadership is committed to continuity and stability.
Pakistan has indeed achieved notable successes on the diplomatic and military fronts in recent times, earning recognition at the global level. These achievements provide a strong foundation upon which the country can now build enduring economic progress. If political stability and consensus-driven policymaking are sustained, Pakistan can further consolidate its standing and permanently etch its name in the comity of nations as a responsible, stable and economically vibrant state.
