Rain Alert for Islamabad, Pakistan: Wet Spell to begin tomorrow

Widespread rain is predicted in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and parts of Pakistan on Thursday and Friday, with occasional breaks.

Heavy snowfall is also expected in the upper parts of the country during the forecast period.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), a strong westerly wave is expected to approach the western parts of Pakistan on Wednesday evening/night. It will likely grip most parts of the country on Thursday.

Under these conditions, cloudy weather accompanied with rain-wind/thunderstorm and snowfall over the hills is expected in Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and northwestern Balochistan on Wednesday evening/night. Cold and partly cloudy weather is expected elsewhere in the country.

On Thursday and Friday, widespread intermittent rain-wind/thunderstorm with snowfall over hills is expected in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Islamabad, Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan.

Heavy snowfall is expected in Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kalam, Shangla, Kohistan, Battagram, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Murree, Galyat, Neelum Valley, Bagh, Haveli, and Rawalakot.

Heavy snowfall may cause road closures/ slippery conditions in Quetta, Ziarat, Chaman, Pishin, Qilla Abdullah, Qilla Saifullah, Noushki, Harnai and Zhob on 22nd January, while in Naran, Kaghan, Dir, Swat, Kalam, Chitral, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Shangla, Astore, Hunza, Skardu, Murree, Galyat, Neelum Valley, Bagh, Poonch, and Haveli on 22nd & 23rd January.

There are possibilities of landslides/avalanches in hilly areas of upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir. Tourists are advised to remain extra cautious and avoid unnecessary travel during the forecast period.

Islamabad’s minimum temperature will likely remain between 02°C and 04°C on Thursday and between 03°C and 05°C on Friday.

Rawalpindi’s minimum temperature will likely remain between 05°C and 07°C on Thursday and between 06°C and 08°C on Friday.

Meanwhile, cold and dry weather prevailed over most parts of the country, while very cold/partly cloudy in hilly areas during the last 24 hours. However, rain/snow occurred at isolated places in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Fog prevailed over a few districts of Punjab, upper Sindh and the plain districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Leh remained the coldest place in the country, where the temperature dropped 10°C below the freezing point. Minimum temperature in Gupis was recorded at -06°C, in Bagrote and Parachinar at -05°C, and in Kalam and Malam Jabba at -04°C, and in Kalat and Quetta at -03°C.

In Islamabad, the minimum temperature was recorded at 03°C. Relative humidity in the morning was recorded at 92 per cent.

In Rawalpindi, the minimum temperature was recorded at 06°C. Relative humidity in the morning was recorded at 80 per cent.
