The Punjab government has devised a mechanism to scrap old and unserviceable vehicles across the province.
Under the new ordinance, vehicles whose registration has expired or been cancelled will be classified as unserviceable vehicles.
Vehicles that fail to obtain fitness or emissions certificates will also be liable for scrapping. In addition, vehicles damaged in accidents, fires or natural disasters may also be declared scrap.
Vehicle owners will also be allowed to voluntarily submit their unserviceable vehicles for scrapping.
Unserviceable vehicles will be taken to designated scrapping centres, which will be established by both the public and private sectors. Usable parts will be removed from the vehicles, while the remaining components will be recycled.
The Governor of Punjab has approved the third major amendment to the Motor Vehicles Ordinance, following which the new law will come into force immediately. Vehicles whose registration has been cancelled will be classified as “End-of-Life Vehicles.”
