LAHORE – The Punjab government has issued advisory for imams and religious scholars ahead of Friday prayers, urging them to use their sermons to promote peace, religious harmony and respect for humanity.
The advisory for Friday prayer said that Islam teaches the values of peace, tolerance and respect for human dignity. It states that sectarianism, religious incitement and disrespect towards sacred religious figures and symbols are not only contrary to the teachings of Islam but also constitute serious offences under the law.
The advisory further says that Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has appealed to imams and religious scholars to raise public awareness about maintaining peace, fostering interfaith and inter-sect harmony, and adhering to the law through their Friday sermons and other religious gatherings.
The provincial government expressed hope that religious leaders would play a constructive role in strengthening social cohesion and promoting an atmosphere of unity and mutual respect across the province.
