LAHORE – The Punjab government has ended the provision of free healthcare facilities under the Universal Health Insurance Program at public sector hospitals from July 01, 2025.

The Punjab Specialised Healthcare and Medical Education Department has directed all public sector hospitals to ensure submission of all pending claims under UHI till June 30, 2025.

“As per approval of the competent authority, implementation of Universal Health Insurance (UHI) in public sector hospitals is going to be closed on 30th June. However, the special initiatives launched by the Honourable Chief Minister Punjab will continue as per current policy”, reads a directive sent by the Punjab SH&ME Department to the medical superintendents of public sector hospitals.

“Therefore, hospitals are once again advised to ensure the timely submission of all pending claims under the UHI. The deadline for uploading all claims is June 30, 2025. Please note that after this date, the State Life Insurance Corporation (SLIC) will not entertain any pending claims”, the directive further reads.

Sehat Card scheme was formally launched in Lahore and other parts of Punjab in December 2021 to provide free treatment facilities to all patients. After ending UHI, the Punjab government will provide free medicines to the patients on its own. The Health card scheme, however, will continue at registered private hospitals in the province.
