Trump hails ‘truly great friendship’ with Xi, accorded lavish White House welcome
Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for stronger cooperation, deeper mutual trust and greater communication between China and the United States, saying both countries should avoid conflict and confrontation.
Speaking at the White House, Xi said China and the US should maintain relations based on mutual respect and keep regular communication between their armed forces. He said the two countries militaries should improve communication and crisis-prevention mechanisms to help prevent tensions from escalating.
Xi said China and the US had an important role in the field of artificial intelligence and shared a responsibility to develop AI for the benefit of humanity, adding that the development of artificial intelligence should remain under human control and that its use should serve public welfare.
The Chinese president said that the two countries had different circumstances but could gain a better understanding of each other through continuous and deeper talks.
He said differences could be set aside and mutual trust built through greater communication, adding that he had a personal relationship with US President Donald Trump and that the two leaders remained in contact.
He called for stronger links in foreign affairs, the economy, financial cooperation and people-to-people exchanges.
Xi said exchanges between the legislative bodies of China and the US should increase, adding that he was ready to work with Trump to further strengthen China-US relations.
Xi said the world was facing major changes and that China and the United States had to play their part in promoting human development and progress. Thanking Trump for the warm hospitality, Xi said he was pleased to make a state visit to the United States.
He conveyed sincere greetings from more than 1.4 billion Chinese people to the American people and congratulated them on the 250th anniversary of American independence.
Xi said China and the US shared a historic responsibility for human development and had agreed to build constructive relations for strategic stability.—Agencies
