Police have decided to conduct a DNA test on a buffalo to resolve its ownership dispute in Indian state Bihar.
Usually, DNA tests are conducted to establish a person’s parentage, identity and, in some cases, to help prove a crime.
According to BBC Urdu, a dispute over ownership of a buffalo lead to this unusual situation. The dispute involves Suraj Yadav, a resident of Siutar village in Bihar, and Prakash Manjhi, who is from a neighbouring village. Both men claim ownership of the same buffalo.
As the dispute escalated and took on a political dimension, local Inspector General of Police Vikas Vaibhav ordered authorities to resolve the matter as quickly as possible using scientific methods.
Following the directive, it was decided that DNA tests would be conducted on the allegedly stolen buffalo and its alleged female calf to determine ownership.
Suraj Yadav claims that his buffalo went missing a few days ago. He did not file a police report and instead began searching for the animal on his own. Yadav also claims that he has the female calf of the missing buffalo in his possession.
