PM ignites hopes

PRIME Minister Shehbaz Sharif has underlined the significance of unity and solidarity that led to Pakistan’s emphatic triumph in the recent armed conflict with India, vowing to steer the country on the path of progress and prosperity.

Addressing a gathering of Overseas Pakistanis in London, he congratulated them on the May 10 victory over India, describing it as a “great triumph” that would be remembered by the enemy forever. Shehbaz stressed that the 240 million citizens stood united with their defence forces and the resultant victory, coupled with achievements on the diplomatic and economic fronts, had elevated the status of the “green passport” globally.

There can be no two opinions that the victory, arising out of principled stand and professionalism of defence forces, has contributed immensely in improving the global image and reputation of the country, which is surely a source of pride for people of Pakistan, especially those working in other countries. It is because of this positive change in the standing of the country that the world now listens seriously to Pakistan and Islamabad has become a focus of diplomacy, triggering prospects for new alliances and realignments. The outcome of the war shattered the myth of India’s conventional superiority and beamed out a clear message that Pakistan has the capability to take care of its defence and security. However, unlike India, which consistently used its strength to brow-beat and blackmail its neighbours, Pakistan has repeatedly asserted that it believes in self-defence and peaceful co-existence. This message was once again conveyed by the Prime Minister who reaffirmed Pakistan’s preference for peace, offering dialogue with India on Kashmir, water, trade and terrorism – but on equal terms. The PM has rightly emphasized the need for greater unity as Pakistan has scored successes on different fronts mainly because of the unity but there are two major challenges that will determine the fate of the country. Our economy is far from satisfactory and over reliance on foreign assistance is compounding the problem. Similarly, internal and external enemies are conspiring to weaken the country and scuttle its march on the road to progress and stability. The incumbent leadership has galvanized hopes for a change for the better but the nation will have to forge unity in its ranks to reach the goalposts of economic prosperity and stability.
