ISLAMABAD – President Asif Ali Zardari and visiting Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Pakistan-Iran relations and advancing regional peace, as the two leaders held high-level talks at Aiwan-i-Sadr against the backdrop of recent tensions in the region.

President Pezeshkian, accompanied by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni and other senior officials, is on his first state visit to Pakistan since the recent conflict that heightened concerns about regional stability.
Welcoming the Iranian president, Zardari described the visit as a powerful reflection of the longstanding brotherly ties between Islamabad and Tehran, emphasizing that both countries have continued to stand by each other through challenging times.
The meeting focused on bilateral relations, regional security, and diplomatic efforts aimed at promoting lasting peace. Zardari also congratulated Pezeshkian on the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, expressing hope that ongoing technical-level negotiations would pave the way for a permanent and sustainable peace in the region.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s position on regional issues, the president reiterated Islamabad’s support for Iran’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, national unity and stability. He stressed that dialogue and diplomacy remain the most effective tools for resolving regional and international disputes, while cautioning against one-sided approaches to complex challenges.
In a significant message to the wider Muslim world, Zardari underscored Pakistan’s commitment to preserving the unity of the Muslim Ummah while maintaining strong and balanced relations with Gulf countries.
Pezeshkian, for his part, praised Pakistan’s constructive role in supporting peace initiatives and dialogue, and thanked Islamabad for its support during recent difficult circumstances. The Iranian president said Tehran attaches great importance to its relationship with Pakistan and is keen to further expand cooperation in political, economic, security and regional affairs.
