Partnership with Google

THE memorandum of understanding signed between government and Google to advance Pakistan’s digital transformation is an encouraging development that could give fresh momentum to our technology sector. At a time when the digital economy is rapidly reshaping global commerce, employment and innovation, deeper cooperation with one of the world’s leading technology companies can help Pakistan strengthen its digital capabilities and compete more effectively in international markets.

One of the most significant aspects of the agreement is the expansion of the Google Career Certificates programme, with a target of 150,000 certificates during 2026. This is a valuable investment in human capital. Digital skills can open new avenues of employment for young Pakistanis, particularly in areas such as information technology, data analytics, cybersecurity and digital marketing. The provision of free access for one year to advanced AI tools, including Google AI Plus and Gemini, for Pakistani students is another important step that can expose a new generation to technologies increasingly shaping the global economy.

The proposed AI centre of excellence in Islamabad is equally significant as it will help Pakistani youth acquire skills aligned with international market requirements. The agreement’s focus on startups, mobile applications, gaming, digital payments and e-commerce can further broaden the foundations of the digital economy.

Perhaps the most important objective is to enhance Pakistan’s IT exports. The proposed task force involving the government, Google and relevant stakeholders should identify barriers facing the sector and develop a practical roadmap for increasing international competitiveness. Pakistan has a large pool of young and talented people and with the right skills, infrastructure, regulatory environment and market access, the country can substantially expand its technology exports. The proposed use of AI in public services, FBR digitization and agriculture also shows that the partnership can extend beyond the technology industry and contribute to wider economic and institutional efficiency.

Most encouragingly, Google’s opening of its local office in Pakistan is a vote of confidence in the country’s digital future. Its presence can deepen technology cooperation and, importantly, encourage other international technology companies to consider Pakistan as a promising market and investment destination.
