State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Governor Jameel Ahmad has said Pakistan’s economic fundamentals have improved significantly since 2022, with inflation easing, the external account stabilising and economic growth gradually recovering.
Addressing the annual convocation of the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Pakistan (ICMA Pakistan), he said real GDP growth had risen from a contraction in FY23 to 3.7 per cent in FY26, with further improvement expected in the current fiscal year. The current account deficit is projected to remain between zero and one per cent of GDP.
Ahmad attributed the progress to timely policy decisions, fiscal discipline and evidence-based policymaking, noting that monetary tightening had helped bring inflation down from above 30 per cent to within the medium-term target range.
He said Pakistan’s economic resilience was gaining recognition from international credit rating agencies, multilateral partners and foreign investors.
The governor urged graduates to uphold professional ethics, rely on evidence-based decision-making and contribute to sustainable and inclusive economic development. He also highlighted the accounting and finance profession’s role in strengthening governance, accountability and the effective use of public resources.
