Pakistan lifts ban on gold imports and exports as SRO restored

Per Tola Gold Price Comes Down To Rs318000 In Pakistan Amid Rate Cut

ISLAMABAD – The federal government has officially lifted the ban on gold imports and exports providing a major relief to business community engaged in jewellary related trade.

Following an approval from the federal cabinet, the Ministry of Commerce issued a notification restoring the previously suspended Statutory Regulatory Order (SRO) related to the global trade of gold.

The notification also revealed that the government has introduced some amendments to the framework governing the import and export of precious metals and jewellry.

This updated framework will continue to promote transparency and improve the automation of the gold trade process.

The ban on gold exports and imports had been imposed earlier this year in May, following concerns over gold smuggling.

The Ministry of Commerce had suspended the SRO that governs gold trade for 60 days starting from May 6, 2025, as part of efforts to regulate the sector.

Reports indicated that the ban was enforced due to concerns over illegal gold smuggling.

However, with no significant complaints of smuggling in recent months, the government decided to lift the restriction and restore the previous regulations.

Earlier, Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) President Atif Ikram Sheikh had urged the government to end the ban on import and export of gold.
