Pakistan China Agree To Deepen Cooperation In Counterterrorism Policing

BEIJING – Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Wednesday held a high-level meeting with Chinese Minister of Public Security Wang Xiaohong in Beijing, with both sides agreeing to further strengthen cooperation in counterterrorism, policing, cybercrime prevention and internal security.

Upon his arrival at the headquarters of China’s Ministry of Public Security, Wang Xiaohong warmly received Mohsin Naqvi and his delegation. The three-and-a-half-hour-long meeting focused on Pakistan-China bilateral relations, joint counterterrorism measures, police training exchange programmes and enhanced collaboration in areas of mutual interest.

The two ministers agreed that the joint working group would meet every three months while interior ministers-level meetings would be held annually. Both sides stressed the need to improve coordination mechanisms to further enhance bilateral cooperation.

The Chinese interior minister expressed satisfaction over the security arrangements for Chinese citizens and projects in Pakistan and thanked Mohsin Naqvi and his team. He also appreciated Pakistan’s efforts in counterterrorism and internal security, acknowledging the sacrifices made by Pakistan in the fight against terrorism.

Both ministers agreed to further strengthen the joint and rapid response mechanism against terrorism and crime and to expand the scope of police training exchange programmes to enhance the professional capacity of law enforcement personnel.

Issues related to Islamabad and Beijing as sister cities were also discussed. The two sides agreed on a joint strategy to improve training and professional skills of police and security personnel in both countries.

Mohsin Naqvi said the protection of Chinese citizens and joint projects remains Pakistan’s top priority, adding that robust security measures have been implemented at all levels, including the establishment of a special protection unit in Islamabad. He welcomed Chinese cooperation in combating cybercrime and said Pakistan seeks support from Chinese institutions to enhance the capacity of the National Cyber Crimes Investigation Agency. He added that AI-based Chinese technology could play an important role in addressing security and counterterrorism challenges.

Reaffirming the strength of Pakistan-China relations, the interior minister said the two countries share a lasting and strategic partnership that cannot be undermined. He invited his Chinese counterpart to visit Pakistan and conveyed goodwill messages from President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif for the Chinese leadership.

Wang Xiaohong invited Mohsin Naqvi to attend the Global Security Cooperation Forum to be held in China in September, reiterating that Pakistan and China are strategic partners and expressing China’s readiness to further expand cooperation at all levels.

Later, the Chinese interior minister hosted a luncheon in honour of the Pakistani interior minister and his delegation. Senior officials from both sides including Pakistan’s ambassador to China Khalil Hashmi, Federal Interior Secretary Khurram Agha and senior police and cybercrime officials were also present.
