ISLAMABAD – Another blow to inflation hit people as prices of packaged milk in Pakistan are set to increase as PML-N-led alliance government approved an 18 percent general sales tax (GST) in the Budget 2024-25.

The country’s national legislature passed Budget 2024-25 on Friday, with an 18pc GST on packaged milk, herbal and homeopathic medicines, and food items. With new slap of GST, branded flour, packaged rice, and lentils will become more expensive.

Despite the Senate Standing Committee on Finance rejecting the proposal, the government proceeded with the decision while sales tax will also impact charitable and welfare hospitals.

The recent move was aimed to increase cost of living for many Pakistanis, especially low-income families who depend on these essential items.

The new taxes were approved despite requests from dairy industry representatives and other stakeholders who urged government to reconsider general sales tax.
