ISLAMABAD – A scrutiny of the nationality status of federal government employees uncovered that more than 2,500 government officers hold dual nationality, while a massive verification exercise covering around 500,000 federal employees is still underway.
Journalist Zahid Gishkori shared development of a wide-ranging investigation by federal government, with the nationality status of officers and their family members being checked through immigration records and foreign travel documents.
Officials have so far completed verification of around 350,000 government employees, while details of approximately 2,400 officers holding dual nationality have already been obtained.
The investigation also revealed that 756 officers and their family members allegedly failed to disclose their dual nationality, raising questions over compliance with the government’s rules regarding foreign and dual citizenship.
Under Civil Servants Rules 2026, government employees are required to declare their foreign or dual nationality. Officials have now been directed to submit complete details and affidavits regarding their nationality status. The scrutiny has also uncovered cases involving the families of government officers. According to official figures, 96 officers and their wives hold foreign nationality only, while the wives of more than 1,200 government officers reportedly possess either dual or foreign nationality.
Meanwhile, 1,680 officers and their wives have already declared their dual nationality. The verification process is being carried out through the FIA Immigration authorities, with officials checking employees’ international travel records and foreign travel documents to establish their nationality status.
Authorities are also contacting foreign embassies and Pakistani missions abroad to further verify the nationality details of government officers.
The crackdown covers key government services and departments, including the Police, Administrative Service, Secretariat Group and Office Management Group.
Federal Board of Revenue and around 40 ministries and divisions have also been directed to obtain and submit details of officers holding foreign or dual nationality. Establishment Division and federal institutions have given government employees a deadline of October 9 to submit the required information.
Officials who fail to provide the details within the deadline will face departmental action, while those found to have deliberately concealed their foreign or dual nationality could face proceedings under the Civil Servants (Efficiency and Discipline) Rules, 2020.
The government’s unprecedented verification drive is expected to reveal the full scale of foreign and dual nationality among federal employees once the remaining approximately 150,000 employees are screened.
