New Zealand is opening doors for international graduates with post-study work visa that allows eligible students to live and work in the country for up to three years after completing their education, offering a potential pathway to permanent residency.
Post-Study Work Visa allows international graduates to remain in the country after finishing their studies and gain valuable work experience. The visa application fee starts from NZD 1,670, while 80% of applications are processed within approximately four and a half weeks.
Who Can Apply?
To qualify, applicants must have recently completed an eligible qualification in New Zealand and submit their application within three months of their student visa expiring. However, there are extended application windows for certain graduates:
- PhD graduates can apply within six months of their student visa expiring.
- Graduates who complete at least 30 weeks of higher-level study immediately after their first eligible qualification may have up to 12 months to apply.
Applicants must also:
- Have at least NZD 5,000 available to cover living expenses.
- Meet New Zealand’s health requirements.
- Demonstrate a genuine intention to stay in the country.
Criteria
Eligible applicants must have completed a Level 7 qualification or higher, such as a bachelor’s degree or above and studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 30 weeks. Those holding a non-degree qualification below Level 7 may also qualify if their course appears on New Zealand’s approved qualification list. However, they must work in a job directly related to their field of study.
Graduates with a Level 7 qualification or above enjoy greater flexibility, allowing them to work for any employer in any occupation. They may also support visa applications for their partner and dependent children.
First, complete an eligible qualification while holding a valid New Zealand student visa.
Second, get all required documents, including Passport or Certificate of Identity. Passport-size photographs., Proof of qualification (degree or diploma), Bank statements showing sufficient funds, police clearance certificate, if you are 17 years or older and plan to stay 24 months or longer, and Certified English translations of any documents issued in another language.
Submit your application online or by paper and pay the required visa fee, and wait for a decision. If your current visa expires during processing, you may be issued an Interim Visa, allowing you to remain legally in New Zealand while your application is assessed.
Track your application status. Successful applicants will receive an electronic visa (eVisa).
