ISLAMABAD – The government has decided to provide affordable mutton, beef and chicken meat to the public amid rising prices across the country.
Reports said agriculture and livestock sectors were severely affected by recent floods, leading to a surge in prices of meat and poultry products.
To stabilize the local market, the ministry has proposed a temporary ban on the export of mutton, beef, chicken, and eggs. Officials believe that restricting exports for a limited period will help bring down domestic prices.
Sources said that the sharp increase in red meat prices has also impacted poultry rates.
The official rate for beef is Rs800 per kilogram and for mutton Rs1,600 per kilogram.
However, in cities like Lahore and other parts of the country, meat is not being sold at official prices.
In many markets, mutton is being sold between Rs2,500 and Rs3,000 per kilogram, far above the government’s fixed rate.
Similarly, the beef meat is being sold for Rs1,300 to Rs1,500 in parts of Pakistan.
The ministry is expected to finalize the export restriction proposal soon to ensure the availability of meat at reasonable prices for local consumers.
