RABAT – Moroccan women’s footballer Faten Ben Omar Al-Azizi has died after drowning while attempting to reach Ceuta, a Spanish territory on the North African coast, local media reported.
Al-Azizi, who had previously represented Maghreb Athletic de Tétouan, was reportedly attempting the dangerous sea crossing from northern Morocco when an accident occurred during the journey.
Her death has sent shockwaves through Morocco’s football community, particularly among players and supporters in the Tangier region, where she was known.
Reports said the route toward Ceuta has become increasingly associated with dangerous attempts to cross the sea from northern Morocco. Rough waters and other hazards have resulted in multiple deaths among people attempting similar journeys in recent times.
Following Al-Azizi’s death, former teammates, friends and members of the Moroccan football community expressed grief and paid tribute to her.
Those who knew her described the footballer as a hardworking, talented and kind-hearted person, remembering her contribution to the sport and her positive character.
Her death has also highlighted the dangers faced by people attempting perilous sea crossings in search of a route into Europe.
