Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed officials to submit a comprehensive and foolproof plan within five days to ensure the provision of safe drinking water across the province.
The directive was issued during a high-level meeting of the Punjab Saaf Pani (Clean Water) Authority, where several key decisions were taken to strengthen the province’s water supply system. Chairing the meeting, the chief minister emphasized that access to clean drinking water is one of her government’s top priorities and called for urgent measures to improve water services in both urban and rural areas.
She instructed officials to accelerate efforts to expand access to safe drinking water and ensure that existing facilities operate efficiently. During the meeting, it was decided that the Punjab Saaf Pani Authority would be restructured and upgraded along modern administrative and technical lines, similar to the province’s “Suthra Punjab” initiative. Officials said the authority would be granted greater administrative and technical autonomy to improve its performance and service delivery.
The meeting was informed that the authority would receive modern technology, additional human resources, and an upgraded transport fleet. Authorities also plan to introduce a comprehensive monitoring system for all water supply trucks and filtration plants to improve transparency and operational efficiency.
Officials further announced that Reverse Osmosis plants and advanced filtration systems would be installed according to the specific needs of different regions. Every filtration and RO plant across Pun-jab will display a unique plant identification number, the operator’s name, contact number, and operating hours to improve public access and accountability.
Participants also agreed to hire an international consultancy firm to help develop a long-term strategy for providing clean drinking water throughout the province.
