Diesel hits a New High: trains, trucks, buses, tractors, tube-wells, and threshers, jumped 2.7% to Rs275.70 per litre from Rs268.38. Experts warn this spike will immediately drive up the prices of vegetables and other essential food items.
Petrol Burden on Everyday Commuters: Petrol, the lifeline for cars, two-wheelers, and rickshaws, increased 2% to Rs258.17 per litre from Rs253.17, tightening budgets for middle- and lower-middle-class families.
The government currently charges Rs105 per litre on petrol and Rs97 per litre on diesel. While GST remains zero on fuel, hefty petroleum levies of Rs87 per litre for petrol and Rs79 per litre for diesel—including a Rs2.50 climate support levy—add to the cost.
On top of this, custom duties of Rs17–18 per litre and distribution/dealer margins of around Rs17 per litre are also being passed on to consumers.
